VIP (vasoactive intestinal peptide) is a 28-amino-acid neuropeptide of the secretin/glucagon superfamily and the endogenous ligand of the class B G-protein-coupled receptors VPAC1 and VPAC2, which it shares with PACAP.
Receptor pharmacology, nomenclature, and the signaling functions of the VPAC receptors are set out in the IUPHAR review by Harmar and colleagues. VIP is used in VPAC-receptor binding and cAMP assays, smooth-muscle preparations, and neuro-immune signaling studies.
