KPV is the C-terminal tripeptide of α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone, Lys-Pro-Val (α-MSH 11-13), the smallest α-MSH fragment reported to retain the parent peptide’s signaling activity in cell assays.
Elliott and colleagues studied KPV alongside α-MSH and ACTH in human keratinocytes and MC1R-transfected CHO cells, reporting rapid intracellular calcium responses rather than cAMP elevation, in a paper on melanocortin peptide signaling in human keratinocytes. It is used in melanocortin-receptor, NF-κB, and epithelial-cell signaling studies.
