L-Carnitine ((R)-3-hydroxy-4-(trimethylammonio)butanoate) is the carrier molecule of the carnitine shuttle: acyl groups are transferred to it by carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1 so that long-chain fatty acids can cross the inner mitochondrial membrane for β-oxidation.
Carnitine transport, the OCTN2 transporter, and the biochemistry of the shuttle are reviewed by Longo, Frigeni and Pasquali. Research-grade L-carnitine is used in fatty-acid-oxidation assays, isolated-mitochondria preparations, and transporter studies.
